The Museum of Making Music...

When we learned a couple of weeks ago that our entire community would have the power turned off for several hours on July 24 for "system upgrades", we figured it was going to be a great day to be some place else.   On Tuesday morning we dropped Sassy and Nica off at our friend's "doggie day care" and headed south to the town of Carlsbad in the northern part of San Diego County.  Over a year ago we'd heard about "The Museum of Making Music" and had been waiting for the perfect opportunity to check it out.

From the museum website - "Founded in 1998 by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), the Museum of Making Music was developed to showcase and celebrate the music products industry.  Soon thereafter, in March 2000, the Museum was opened to the public.  For over ten years, the Museum has provided opportunities for cultural enrichment while preserving our musical heritage through special exhibitions, innovative concerts and educational programs aimed toward a wide range of audiences.  On permanent display are hundreds of vintage instruments, audio and video clips, and a vibrant interactive area.  Organized chronologically, each gallery features the historic milestones, popular music and instruments of those eras.  A snapshot of music business practices and nostalgic re-creations of music stores provide a glimpse into the music products industry."

Yes, that's what we saw!  In addition to walls and walls of displays of musical instruments, there are a number of electric drum sets, keyboards, and guitars (with headphones!) available for visitors to sit down and play.   It would be a great place to take kids, though we imagine that if a large school group were in there, it could be a bit noisy!

With time to kill after our tour of the museum, we headed over to the coast to do a bit more exploring.

A little Northern San Diego County coastline...

and a couple of examples of the unique, sometimes funky architecture that we always seem to find in beach towns!

Buena Vista Audubon Nature Center...

As we drove along the coast, we saw wetlands on the inland side of Highway 101, just before the entrance to the home of the Buena Vista
Audubon Society.  We had to turn in and check it out!  Inside the building were displays and a room where small group lectures could be held.  Trails around the wetlands area give hikers a great view of the habitat for local water fowl.
