Last fall, before planting bib lettuce in this pot, Margaret had decided that she wanted to try strawberries in the coming year. For a long time, this big pot had been the fall/winter home to nasturtiums, and in the spring and summer, the pot filled in with brightly colored bloomed calla lilies But, the callas seemed to be wearing out and she felt it was time for a change. Before planting the lettuce, she dug and dug and dug through that big pot, removing all the calla tubers. Or so she thought!
While we aren't ready to start a strawberry stand with our yield from four plants, they've been quite productive this spring, and the fruit has been sweet enough to just rinse off and pop in your mouth for a quick snack. These are an ever-blooming variety (says the plant tag), and should continue to send out new berries until the fall.
But... as this pictures shows, the callas are staging a comeback. Several little spikes have started popping up through the soil, plus one leaf already beginning to unfurl. We guess only time will if the two species can peacefully coexist.
